SPRINGDALE — The city Capital Improvement Committee on Tuesday told city planners to start looking for a place to build a work-release center for inmates from the Arkansas Department of Correction.

The Capital Improvement Committee, which oversees money used for infrastructure, told planners to seek qualifications from firms that can design a 23-bed addition to Springdale’s 12-bed jail.

The expanded facility would house low-risk state inmates who would clean public property and perform basic maintenance on police vehicles, Police Chief Kathy O’Kelley said.

The city would be expected to chip in as much as $ 3. 8 million for construction, but would save annually on food and lodging for the inmates. The Department of Correction would run the entire jail and would build a portion of the new facility for work-release inmates.
