CONWAY — University of Central Arkansas President Lu Hardin will not know for several months whether surgery aimed at shrinking a tumor behind his right eye was successful, his assistant said Tuesday.

In an e-mail to UCA staff members, Susan Lilly wrote, “President Hardin’s surgery to remove the radioactive plaque from his eye was successful.” She said he would return to Conway later Tuesday.

Doctors at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis placed the plaque behind Hardin’s eye last week after determining recently that he had what appeared to be a malignant tumor there for the second time in four years.

“His doctor has advised him to keep a very light schedule for the next two weeks; however, he will take care of any pressing matters in the office and will also help kick off the school year,” Lilly wrote.

In a brief interview, Lilly said Hardin, who will turn 57 in September, may work from home today. But she said he also may “physically show up” in his UCA office as well.

Hardin is still scheduled to attend the 34 th annual Toast and Roast, where he is to be honored Thursday night. The gala in Little Rock benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arkansas, a mentoring organization that pairs children and teenagers with adults or couples.
