AMERICAN LEAGUE : Arkansan Burnett strikes out 13 Yankees in victory

TORONTO — A. J. Burnett won his sixth consecutive start and seventh in a row at home in the Toronto Blue Jays ’ 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.

Burnett (North Little Rock, Central Arkansas Christian ) improved to 16-9, allowing 1 run, 5 hits and 1 walk with a season-high 13 strikeouts in 8 innings. He threw 120 pitches. It’s the 21 st time in his career Burnett has had 10 or more strikeouts in a game.

Yankees center fielder Johnny Damon allowed two balls to glance off his glove, including an eighth-inning drive by Marco Scutaro that became the go-ahead double, and Blue Jays first baseman Lyle Overbay helped preserve the lead in the top of the ninth with a brilliant throw to get Alex Rodriguez trying to stretch a hit into a double.

With the score 1-1, Joe Inglett hit a two-out single. Scutaro followed with a deep drive to center. Damon settled under the ball on the warning track, but it ticked off the top of his glove and off the wall, allowing Inglett to score.

Rodriguez led off the ninth against Blue Jays closer B. J. Ryan with a flair down the right-field line that bounced off the turf and into foul territory. Overbay chased the ball, sliding on a knee to grab it before it went off the wall, and made a strong throw to second as he popped off the ground to nab Rodriguez as he slid in head first. Ryan got the final two outs for his 24 th save. RAYS 4, ANGELS 2 Willy Aybar broke an eighthinning tie with a two-run double as host Tampa Bay beat Los Angeles for its ninth victory in 11 games. The Rays improved to 6-2 against the Angels, including 5-0 at home. RED SOX 7, ORIOLES 2 Daisuke Matsuzaka (15-2 ) won his fourth consecutive start despite giving up 2 runs, 6 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings as Boston beat host Baltimore. INDIANS 9, ROYALS 4 Grady Sizemore hit a threerun home run, his 28 th, as host Cleveland beat Kansas City. TWINS 13, ATHLETICS 2 Kevin Slowey ( 10-8 ) had a career-high 12 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings and Brian Buscher matched his career best with five RBI as host Minnesota beat Oakland. WHITE SOX 5, MARINERS 0 Clayton Richard (1-2 ) pitched six innings for his first major league victory as host Chicago beat Seattle. TIGERS 11, RANGERS 3 Matt Joyce homered twice, including a three-run shot in a nine-run seventh as Detroit beat host Texas.

National League CUBS 5, REDS 0 Rich Harden (3-1 ) allowed 2 hits and no walks in 7 innings, struck out 10 and bunted in the go-ahead run for his first career RBI as host Chicago beat Cincinnati for its seventh victory in eight games and 17 th in 21. Carlos Marmol pitched a scoreless eighth and Kerry Wood gave up a two-out single in the ninth while completing the three-hitter. Geovany Soto had a leadoff triple in the fifth when his long drive to right-center hit off the glove of a diving Corey Patterson. After a walk to Kosuke Fukudome and a strikeout, Johnny Cueto (8-12 ) slipped on his first pitch to Harden, who then bunted. When third baseman Edwin Encarnacion threw to first for the out, Soto broke for the plate and scored when first baseman Joey Votto made a low throw that bounded away from catcher Paul Bako. Harden got the RBI on the play, while Votto was charged with an error for allowing Fukudome to advance. PIRATES 4, CARDINALS 1 Ian Snell (5-10 ) threw seven scoreless inning to outpitch Braden Looper (11-10 ) and lead Pittsburgh over host St. Louis. The Cardinals have lost 8 of 11 at home and are 33-29 at Busch Stadium while going a NL-best 37-29 on the road. Ryan Doumit had three of the Pirates’ five hits, including an RBI double in the first that drove in the lone run before a three-run ninth in which the Cardinals made two errors that led to two unearned runs. ASTROS 5, BREWERS 2 Geoff Blum hit a tiebreaking three-run home run in the sixth as Houston beat Ben Sheets (11-7 ) and host Milwaukee for its 10 th victory in 13 games. Blum was hitless in nine at-bats before he hit a 1-2 pitch from Sheets to rightcenter for his career-high 12 th home run. PHILLIES 5, NATIONALS 4 Jayson Werth hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth as host Philadelphia handed Washington its 11 th consecutive loss of the season.
