BENTONVILLE— An eighth-grade English teacher with Washington Junior High School died Friday after collapsing during the district’s annual back-to-school meeting.
Heidi Meyer collapsed and had seizures outside the Arend Arts Center at Bentonville High School following Superintendent Gary Compton’s annual back-to-school celebration speech.
“ Everyone was leaving for the north building for the vendor fair, and between the two buildings, (Meyer ) collapsed, ” Compton said. “ We called 911 immediately. There was no trauma. She did not hit her head that we know of. ”
Meyer was taken by ambulance to Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville, where she died shortly after noon.
“ She was a beloved teacher, and our staff and students will miss her greatly, ” said Kim Garrett, principal of Washington Junior High School.
“(Meyer’s death ) was very sudden, and there is a lot of shock about what happened right now, ” Garrett said.
“ It is a sad day, ” Compton said.
Meyer, a teacher with Washington Junior High School since 2000, leaves behind her husband, Donovan, and her daughter, Avery, who is almost 2 years old.
