‘An awesome first day’ : Rogers Heritage High School opens

ROGERS — Although the building is new, it’s really the same job, Assistant Principal David Webb said on the first day of classes at Rogers Heritage High School. The experience of teachers and administrators resulted in a smooth opening for the district’s second high school, he said.
“ It’s been great all day, ” he said of Monday. “ An awesome first day. ”
The kind of issues the staff dealt with were the same as at any other school, he said. There were a few students who arrived at the wrong school and many more who needed schedules adjusted. Heritage students received their schedules when they arrived on the first day of school.
Webb spent his morning dealing with students who didn’t return textbooks at their former campus and were required to pay for them.
The building was ready for school on the first day.
“ The lights came on in every room, ” he said. Teachers will need some training to make better use of the energysaving systems installed in the building, he said.
Lunch is always difficult on the first day of school, Webb noted, “ but you just keep plugging along. ”
The transportation staff is also working on fine-tuning bus routes, he said. The district’s transportation director was at Heritage when the buses arrived.
The students seemed to be impressed with the new building, he said.
“ Kids are a lot more flexible than adults, ” he said. He believes the students are happy to be in a new building and aren’t concerned about having two high schools.
About 1, 700 students were expected on the first day of school.
