ROGERS— In an early season boys ’ golf match between Bentonville and Rogers Heritage on Tuesday, both teams showed that they had room for improvement at Prairie Creek Country Club.
The teams played the front nine holes and Bentonville shot 166 to beat the War Eagles by 15 strokes on Heritage’s home course.
Both coaches said that their players could do better on the course, which had a par of 36 for the front nine.
Brik Brauberger led the Tigers, shooting a one over par 37.
“ He is just a solid player, ” said Bentonville boys coach Kent Early. “ He always shoots well. ”
Cameron Kehob added a 42, while senior Ben Sullivan shot a 43 and Harry Roper 44.
“ We’re still missing a lot of putts, ” Early said. “ We are doing good getting out of the box. We’ve just got to work on our short game. ”
Chas Goines led the War Eagles with a 40. Junior Jared Gilstrap shot 43, while junior Jack McMillan and Taylor Goines each shot a 49.
“ When you catch a good team on a bad day, you hope to come away with something but it didn’t happen, ” said Heritage coach Jay Gilstrap. “ We could absorb one high 40 s but not anymore. ”
Gilstrap said his team could do a better job at hitting the greens in regulation.
“ We need to work on hitting fairways and greens. That is all we’ve got to do, ” he said. The front nine holes proved to be a challenge for both teams as many balls were hooked and sliced into the woods. Heritage’s next match is Thursday when they host Springdale Har-Ber at Prairie Creek. Bentonville doesn’t play again until next Wednesday against Rogers at Lost Springs Golf & Athletic Club.
• • • Three Bentonville girls’ team members made the trip on the same bus despite not having an opponent to play. Heritage does not currently have a girls’ golf team due to a lack of participation.
The Lady Tigers played the back nine holes, which has a par 40. Senior Lindsay Parks shot a 3-over par 43, sophomore Alexandra Kerby shot 44 and senior Lauren Anderson shot 65.
“ I thought it was very peaceful back there, ” said coach Lindsey Davis. “ It was a long course but they played well considering there are six par 5 s. They hit the ball on the fairway. ”
