BENTONVILLE — The Wal-Mart Foundation announced a $ 250, 000 donation to Arkansas Food Banks at the Sam’s Club in Little Rock on Wednesday.
The local announcement coincides with a national gift of $ 2. 5 million from Wal-Mart to Feeding America, the nation’s largest charitable hunger-relief organization. The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance Food Banks are local partners of the Feeding America network.
Members of the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance receiving this donation include the Arkansas Foodbank Network, the Foodbank of North Central Arkansas, the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, Harvest Texarkana and the River Valley Regional Food Bank.
“ In this unprecedented time of need, Wal-Mart is committed to making the greatest impact here in Arkansas by supporting charitable causes that are important to our customers, ” Kevin Rucker, market manager for Sam’s Club, said in a company news release. “ Our donation to the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance food banks represents the Wal-Mart philosophy of operating globally and giving back locally. ”
The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance network provides emergency food to almost 300, 000 Arkansans each year, 40 percent of whom are children, 10 percent are elderly and 36 percent are households with at least one adult working.
Wal-Mart’s total financial contribution to the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance food banks in 2008 amounts to $ 350, 000.
