Speech and debate team from JBU gets first at tournament

SILOAM SPRINGS — John Brown University’s speech and debate team took first place at the Louisiana State University-Shreveport speech and debate tournament on Nov. 14-16.
Twenty schools from Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas competed for the top honor.
Leading the way was freshman Brandon Knight. In Novice Public debate, Knight placed second overall out of 78 competitors.
Teammate senior Matt Mellema was a quarterfinalist in Varsity Public debate, and teammate freshman Chad Neal also was a quarterfinalist. Also earning debate wins and points for the team were seniors Rissa Murphy and Josh Sooter; sophomores Scarlett Bush, Daniel Fischer, Amber Wilson; and freshmen Susan Greathouse, Mikey Kerby, Chelsey Knight, and Jeff Trott.
In individual events, Murphy and Wilson scored multiple points for the team. In team Duo Interpretation, Murphy and Wilson placed second. Individually, Murphy placed fifth in Communication Analysis and sixth in Prose Interpretation. Wilson scored sixth in Communication Analysis. Also scoring individual event points for the team were Greathouse in Prose and C. Knight in Poetry Interpretation.
The team’s next competition is the Christmas Classic Regional Tournament at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., on Dec. 5-7.
