The house is sparkling clean. The refrigerator is stocked full of goodies. The holidays are coming and so are the grandchildren. The only thing left to do is to find a crib and stroller, but who — oh who — has either one ?

Baby Smart Travel will come to the rescue. It has all types of baby equipment available for rent.

The two founders, Glenda Miner and Judy Palmer, started the business Aug. 1.

“ Both of us were having difficulty getting the right baby equipment when our grandchildren came to visit, ” Miner said.

The first problem would be to find a friend that could lend them a crib or high chair. Then, especially with a crib, the problem became getting it from a friend’s home to her home.

Miner remembered borrowing a crib from a friend and struggling to take it apart, carry it downstairs, moving it home and then having to put it back together again. At the end of the visit, she had to do it all over again.

The women decided renting baby equipment was a niche market not being served in this area, so they got their business plan together, bought equipment, created a brochure and built a Web site.

Their mission is to provide customers peace of mind by providing baby gear in tiptop condition so it is safe and cleaning it thoroughly so it is sanitized.

“ We only rent brand new car seats and cribs, ” Miner said. They have to be safe. Some of the other equipment pieces they rent have been gently used, but they are sanitary and in great shape, she added.

When someone rents from them, the women go to the home, set up all the equipment, explain how it works and then return to pick it up. Making the experience as easy as possible is very important, Miner said.

“ You don’t have to do anything. ”

They do everything, except, for liability reasons, install car seats. Most of the time children’s parents will know how to do that. If they don’t, the area police departments have officers who can assist them, she said.

The rental fee for a fullsize crib is $ 15 for one to three days and $ 60 for four to seven days, plus a $ 20 delivery and set up fee. The crib comes with all the linens, but customers may rent extra ones in case of accidents for $ 5.

In addition to cribs, they rent single, tandem, jogging and umbrella strollers; high chairs or booster seats; car seats and car boosters seats; swings, bouncers, play mats, buckets of toys, bed rails, monitors and white noise machines.

“ If customers need a lot, the Smart Baby Super Saver Package is quite a bargain, ” Miner said. The package includes: a crib or bed, stroller, high chair, car seat, choice of one accessory, plus a bucket of toys. The fee for the package for one to three days is $ 40 and for four to seven days is $ 140.

With the holidays coming up, she suggested calling as soon as possible to be certain they will have the needed inventory.

“ We’re grandmothers and we love this, ” Miner said. “ We do it as if our own grand children were using it. ”

As their brochure states: “ Don’t come unraveled. Choose Baby Smart Travel. ”
