The local Veterans of Foreign Wars ladies ’ auxiliary has announced the winners of a patriotic scholarship competition.

The Patriot’s Pen essay contest was sponsored by Bella Vista’s Robert M. Sterrett VFW Post 9063. The contest was open to students — both homeschooled and in public schools — in grades 6-8.

This year’s theme was “ Why America’s Veterans Should Be Honored. ”

Auxiliary members Evie Feltz and Lorna Sterrett co-chaired the competition. Eligible entries were judged by Marianne Farner, Dorothea Paul, Pat Brannon, Douglas Grant, Joe Tropansky and Marilyn Block.

The judges read and scored each entry individually.

The totals were tallied by Feltz and Sterrett.

Winners with the highest scores were:

First place, Indran Kamalanathan, an eighth-grader at Washington Junior High School in Bentonville;

Second place, Haley Weeks, who also is in eighth grade at Washington Junior High; and

Third place, Carson Alsup, a seventhgrader at Gravette Middle School.

The ladies ’ auxiliary will award the winners with U. S. savings bonds at a later date. The amounts will be $ 100 for first place, $ 75 for second and $ 50 for third.
