Emerging politicians at Cooper Elementary School understand their purpose.

At their third meeting, held Nov. 11, student council members were asked to consider their roles and goals for the year.

“ Our purpose is to help the students have better posture and respect for others, ” said Madison Oswalt, new cosecretary for the council.

Co-secretary Savanna Gauthier has similar goals.

“ Our purpose is to give a good example for the other students. We show what our school is like — that it’s a good school to be at, ” she said.

The student council takes on projects to benefit three groups: the community, school and students.

“ Our purpose is to serve the community and the school, ” President Austin Bayles said.

The council’s first community undertaking was selling pickles before school to raise money for the United Way. The group took in more than $ 200.

Council members have organized a canned-food drive for local food pantries that will continue through Dec. 12. Donors may take nonperishable food items to the school at 2 Blowing Springs Road between the hours of 8: 30 a. m. and 4 p. m. weekdays.

The students are considering a service project for the school and will be meeting with Principal Ryan Oswalt to discuss cleaning up trash around the building.

To benefit their fellow students, council members help their peers with conflict resolution.

They expressed concern about the large number of students newly enrolled in the school.

“ There are lots of new kids in fourth grade, and a lot of them are lonely, ” Treasurer Devon Arnone said. “ Just treat them like you like to be treated. There was a new kid that was mean, but I just kept being nice, and now he’s like my best friend. ”

Vice President Cody Holman joined in.

“ You need to play fairly on the playground and invite the new kids to play. ”

“ We’ll be responsible so it’ll keep passing around, ” Historian Brooklyn McAlister said. “ We’re the oldest, so we need to be polite. ”

The student council members are fourth-graders, the highest grade in the school.
