On Oct. 29, exactly one month after 119 men were tested for prostate cancer in the Allen’s Food Store parking lot, the Hummers of Highlands Church presented a $ 5, 000 check to the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation of Little Rock.
The Hummers, along with the foundation and golf legend Arnold Palmer’s “ Arnie’s Army, ” raised more than $ 15, 000 for the fight against prostate cancer through their second annual golf tournament.
The event took place Sept. 27 in Bella Vista.
As a follow-up to the event, the foundation sent its state-of-the-art mobile testing unit to Bella Vista on Sept. 29. A doctor conducted screenings and checked each man’s prostate-specific antigen level.
The PSA number, derived from a blood test, helps a physician determine if anything out of the ordinary is occurring with the patient’s prostate.
Any number greater than 2. 5 is suspicious.
Of the 119 men tested, 35 had PSAs of 2. 5 or more, and two had irregular prostates.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of disease deaths among men in the United States, after lung cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Experts recommend men be tested on an annual basis starting at age 50.
