Hog Calls : Razorback junior forward Washington named player of week

NATE ALLEN Sports columnist

FAYETTEVILLE — Already these young Razorbacks in this young season have matched one standard set by Arkansas' 1994 national championship team. Now that junior forward Michael Washington of McGehee has been named SEC Player of the Week for a second time to go with an earlier SEC Player of the Week honor by freshman point guard Courtney Fortson, John Pelphrey's current Razorbacks have matched the SEC Players of the Week numbers of Nolan Richardson's 1994 Razorbacks. Scotty Thurman logged that honor twice, and Corliss Williamson once for Richardson's Razorbacks of 1994. Washington becomes Arkansas' first two-time SEC Player of the Week since former point guard Gary Ervin for former Arkansas coach Stan Heath's Hogs in 2007. Big man Washington achieved his latest big honor in a big way. He duplicated recognition from the SEC Office, it was announced Monday in Birmingham, Ala. for his 24 points/11 rebounds doubledouble in the Dec. 20 96-88 upset over nationally fourthranked Oklahoma at Walton Arena in Fayetteville - Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Kelly scores career high of 50 Blackhawks finish third at Southwest Holiday Tourney

FROM STAFF REPORTS

WASHBURN, Mo. — Pea Ridge junior forward Kip Kelly scored a career-high 50 points in Pea Ridge's 82-54 win against Eureka Springs on Tuesday in the third place game of the Southwest Holiday Tournament. Kelly scored 24 points in the first half and 26 in the second half. The Blackhawks (7-4 ) scored a season-high 82 points, including 26 in the fourth quarter. "(Kelly) came out of the game in the fourth quarter and someone said to me, ‘Coach, Kip's got 47 points,'" Blackhawk coach Charley Clark said. "I said, ‘OK, Kip, you've got two shots at it.' I put him back in and he hit a three-pointer." It was Kelly's fifth threepointer of the game but the majority of his points came on buckets at close range. "He did a good job of getting on the block with his post moves and being aggressive and not settling for 12-footers," Clark said. Kelly came into the game averaging 14.7 points. After his 50-point blowup, he raised that mark to 17.9. Clark wasn't sure if the 50 points was a school record. Pea Ridge's leading scorer - Wednesday, January 7, 2009
