Long wait for flu shot
Posted on Thursday, November 20, 2008
Our mayor, John Gray, is now in rehab and getting along fine. This was the heartening news I got when I called City Hall to check up on him. We hope that he is feeling better and better every day. Our prayers and best wishes go out to him. You can send a get-well card to him, and address it to City Hall and someone will take it to him. We, at the center, all signed one and mailed it a few days ago. We hope it cheered him up.
Maurine Lee and I were the only two from our center to get involved in the flu shot event at the Arvest ball park in Springdale. Cars were lined up as far as the eye could see. We got in one of the lines, and there were just as many cars behind us as there were ahead of us. We crept along for an hour or more before we got to where the shots were given. The people in autos did not have to get out of their car, and this meant pretty rapid service. However since we were in a van, we had to get out of it to get our shot. Was that wind ever cold ! I felt sorry for the folks giving the shots because they had to be out in the cold air with no protection from the wind. They all managed a brave smile now and then. Thank goodness we got our shot ! The Fayetteville center must have anticipated our long wait in line, because we were furnished canned tea and cookies. That did help a whole lot, and we thank them.
On Saturday Nov. 8, we celebrated Juanita Ramey’s 86 th birthday at the Church of Christ here in Greenland. There was a table full of good things to eat and a big beautiful birthday cake. Did I forget to say “ ice cream ? ” Yes, we had that too.
Juanita looked so pretty in a snazzy green velour pantsuit. Happy smiles came on her face when people walked in the door and had their pictures taken with her. I hope I get to see those pictures.
She is a very special lady, and we were so glad to help her celebrate her special day. We wanted her to know how much we love her.
I have to tell you about the man that took the pictures. He is incredible ! He is a hero and an inspiration to all of us that got to meet him. He is Juanita’s son-in-law and, due to cancer, has no vocal chords. He spoke through a microphone held against his neck. He was the life of the party. He and his wife were visiting here from Texas. I am sorry to not have his name. A fine reporter I turned out to be ! I am sorry. Annette Andrada was at the party too, looking so pretty and pert. It was great to get to see her again. She used to be our director at the senior center. She now lives in Siloam Springs. On Veteran’s Day the senior centers were all closed for the holiday, so Alice Wagner came after me in her car and drove us to Mama Dean’s Soul Food Cafe, where Burger King used to be. We ordered chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and purple pod peas. Good gracious, what a plate of food they brought us. We got a whole quart of iced tea in a fruit jar, and banana pudding for dessert. The food was very good, and we recommend it highly. If you go there, you had better go there hungry, because you will get plenty to fill you up !
Another “ Blonde” joke from over the internet: (my apologies to all the blonde people reading this. I don’t know how this got started ) Anyway, here goes. A blonde lady was on a river bank, trying to get across to the other side. She noticed another blonde lady on the other side of the river, and she called out to her, “ How can I get to the other side ? ” The blonde lady looked up the river and then looked down the river and then yelled, “ You ARE on the other side !”
